About Elite

Elite is a space trading video game from video game developer Acornsoft, originally released in 1984. The purpose of Elite is to become the “Elite” by increasing your combat rating.

Elite was one of the first games ever to use wire-frame 3D graphics with hidden line removal. The game also separated itself from the competition by inclusion of a Robert Holdstock novella which aimed to inspire players to improve their moral and ethical codes. At the time, Elite was a highly progressive game with 3D graphics and an advanced game engine.

Elite is considered the benchmark of space trading games despite the fact that it was not the first game in its genre (that accolade belongs to Star Trader from 1974). The gameplay in Elite combines a “buy low sell high” freight transport system, space combat and the ability to upgrade your ship by using whatever profit you have made. You begin playing as “Commander Jameson” though you can change the name if you like. You start at a Lave Station with 100 credits and then set out encountering ships and accumulating credits to upgrade your ship. You’ll be engaging in piracy, military missions, trading and more to gain loot and then using it to improve your ship.

Elite remains a benchmark in its genre and is a cult classic thanks to its use of what was, for the time, highly advanced game design. For more great games like Elit see our list below.
